Chlorophyll and its derivatives such as chlorophyllin, have a long history of use in traditional medicine and for therapeutic purposes and have shown to have a wide range of biological activities. They have potent antioxidant properties, protecting the DNA from free radical damage and oxidative stress, anti-inflammatory and antimutagenic properties, modulation of xenobiotic metabolism, and the induction of apoptosis. They’ve also been used in wound healing, the control of calcium oxalate crystals, and as an internal deodorant. It is shown that chlorophyll has the ability to form complex structures with certain toxic substances, affecting absorption through the gastrointestinal tract, thereby decreasing the exposure of these toxic substances to susceptible tissue. Further to this, chlorophyll is efficacious against dangerous substances such as aflatoxins and mycotoxins; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, formed through incomplete combustion; heterocyclic amines, that occur through high temperature cooked meat.

Fulvic acid is a subclass of humic substances, a group of compounds produced by microorganisms in soil. Fulvic acid has been used for a range of medical conditions such as diarrhoea, stomach ulcer, colitis, diabetes, osteoarthritis and hematoma, however the mechanistic action is still largely not understood. One report states that fulvic acid can stimulate osteoclastic resorption of transplanted bones as well as hydroxyapaptite, while another shows fulvic and humic acids to stimulate neutrophil and lymphocytes, thereby improving immune function.
