Probiotics

In order to function optimally, we require a healthy balance of ‘good bacteria’ (or microbes) within our body, especially throughout the digestive system. Digestive disturbances occur when there is an imbalance of microbial diversity and/or a lack of abundance. This leads to a dysregulation of the microbiome, triggering inflammation, dyspepsia and a decreased immune response.
 
Digestive disruption can occur from medications such as antibiotics. While antibiotics are an important treatment for some infectious diseases, they can also lead to disruption of the diversity and abundance of the intestinal microbiome. Many studies report in both children and adults, the use of probiotics have a beneficial result for the prevention of antibiotic associated symptoms. 

When taken as part of a holistic treatment regime, probiotics have also been shown to be beneficial in conditions such as irritable bowel, bloating, flatulence, indigestion, diarrhoea, constipation, bad breath (halitosis), food intolerances and sensitivities. Further, they can assist with recovery from digestive illness such as gastroenteritis, diarrhoea and traveller’s diarrhoea, while helping to strengthen the immune system in conditions such as ear infections. A balanced microbiome also plays a vital role in weight loss efforts.
