Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a common condition that can occur at any age between puberty and menopause, characterised by various emotional and physical symptoms occurring the week or two prior to menstruation.

Affective (emotional) symptoms include:

  • Irritability, mood swings, exasperation

Somatic (physical) symptoms include:

  • Breast tenderness, bloating, headaches, abdominal pain
  • Additionally, menstrual cycle irregularities can occur:
    Polymenorrhoea – cycles that are shorter or more frequent than 21 days.
    Oligomenorrhea – infrequent periods occurring more than 35 days apart.
    Amenorrhea – the absence of a period for three cycles or more, when not caused by pregnancy or menopause.
